Podcasts are not something that happens today. They had their moment a few years ago, but in a different format, which at the time made perfect sense. It was just audio that you could listen to whenever you wanted on any MP3 player, from the one you could buy for R$99.00 in downtown São Paulo to the modern iPods, an object of desire for many people at that time, but which today have become an item of nostalgia.
With the growth of smartphones and cell phone plans with many gigabytes of internet access, watching videos became much easier, the Podcast – as it was – lost its strength, became obsolete and almost died. Video was more fun and closer to people, and it is no wonder that influencers gained so much prominence at that time, something that grows year after year.
In the United States, the craze has been back for a few years. My friend André Muniz has been talking since 2018 about how some Americans earn millions of dollars a year making podcasts, sometimes self employed database their homes or from small studios set up specifically for this purpose.
Equipment that used to be expensive and difficult to access can now be purchased at any online store in the country, both there and here! You don't need to be a technology expert; just look at what the most successful programs use to find similar products. Some of them are sponsored by brands, which makes it even easier.
The evolution
I'm not sure which podcast started this craze, but Flow and Podpah are undoubtedly among the best and pioneers. Ticaracaticast, for me, is the best, it came on the wave and consolidated itself! There's +1PodCast from Rádio Jovem Pan, Vênus and Hermanas, which feature women to debate everything.
There are many quality podcasts today, which has opened space for a market of podcast “cuts” that help to increase the audience. Cuts are an excellent strategy to arouse people's curiosity to watch the full material, which was normally between 1:30 and 2:30.
Video : From villain to partner
Remember when I said that video almost killed podcasts? Well, it was video that brought them back to life! When podcasts went from being just audio to being video, they started being live, they brought the concept of chat to the center and they also benefited from social networks and cuts to be a success, and things got serious!
One of the biggest programs in the history of radio, Pânico, which has been on the air for decades with a very high audience, was already in the PodCast format since the beginning of the 2000s and served as inspiration for many projects today.
What does evolution bring?
This evolution can be excellent for those who make Podcasts. We are currently experiencing growth in this market, however, like all markets, it will eventually become saturated and only the best will remain.
The podcast is back! And with everything!
