Digital Transformation, Automation and Digitalization of the Management System: What's the Difference
The English term "digitalization" can be translated in two ways: as digitalization (transition to digital processes) and as digitization (transfer of data to digital formats). In modern Russian, not only the concept of "digitalization" is in use, but also tracings from the English source (digitalization, digitalization). All these words are used equally, while this concept has not yet been established.

The beginning of the digitalization era is considered to be the 1940s: it was then that the first computers were designed to perform complex calculations for scientific and military purposes.

The more computing devices improved and became cheaper, the more areas of life were penetrated by digitalization. The 1970s were marked by the first qualitative leap in this area: the emergence of personal computers made information technology accessible to ordinary users and organizations, opening the way to digitalization in the sphere of management. Further milestones on this path were the rapid development of the Internet from the end of the 80s and throughout the 90s of the last century and then the spread of PDAs. The mass fashion for smartphones began at the end of the first decade of the 21st century.

Digitalization today is one of the global and long-term technological trends that affect not only all sectors of the economy (from creative industries to agriculture and mining), but also the entire life of society. Computers and the Internet have had a significant impact on culture.

In general, digitalization of enterprise management can be characterized as the introduction of information technologies that are relevant today into various corporate business processes in order to improve their efficiency and quality. For example, a small company like a private bakery that has installed a CRM to speed up order processing and delivery is at the digitalization stage. But if the same small bakery starts using artificial intelligence (AI) to train staff, this will already be called digital transformation of business - the introduction of technologies into management for the sake of completely replacing obsolete, old methods of doing business with innovative solutions.

Digitalization is closely related to digital transformation – they cannot be done separately. But digitalization simply shifts some of the work previously done by people to computers and programs and simplifies it for some business processes. And transformation involves more fundamental changes, up to and including a revision of all business operations in a company.
