Working with influencers is essential to the success of a marketing campaign, but how much does it cost? How much do influencers expect to charge, and how much do you get for your money?

As the influencer marketing landscape evolves, the professionalization of influencers is changing the relationships between influencers and marketers. For marketers, it is essential to know how and why influencers charge the fees they do in order to budget and execute campaigns effectively.

Influencers rarely charge a flat fee, instead preferring to set prices based on market assessment. Factors that come into play include reach and engagement, channel, number and type of posts, effort required for the campaign, ad placement, and agency fees.

Which influencer for which campaign?
When deciding how much to pay influencers, it’s helpful to think of them as individual small businesses: each will charge a different rate based on unique variables . These may include an influencer’s age, audience, reach, industry, content licensing fees, sampling and travel costs, or social security contributions.

The reach an influencer achieves with their content is just as important as engagement. To what extent does an influencer’s audience engage with their content? Typically, influencers charge per post depending on the industry and platform used. In 2022, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Snapchat, Twitch, Twitter, and Facebook are the dominant platforms for influencer marketing.

The costs of each platform are determined by cost per thousand (CPM) , a marketing term that denotes billing per 1,000 views.

What about other costs?
Prices also depend on the number of influencers operating in the sector. In popular sectors such as beauty and fashion, prices are lower, but in niche sectors where fewer influencers compete, prices can be higher.

Improve your negotiation skills
Effective and friendly negotiation skills are essential to maintaining reasonable costs and healthy relationships with influencers. Don’t forget that KOLs are experts and opinion leaders in their respective fields. Their followers trust them and value their recommendations. Therefore, in addition to having a great product, it is crucial to choose an appropriate compensation model and find a common basis for cooperation. Transparency is key! Marketers should clearly communicate the objectives and expectations of the campaign (posts, stories, videos, live streams, reels, etc.) and set fair but firm deadlines.

Collaboration opportunities range from shoutouts, giveaways, takeovers, affiliate marketing, and sponsored content to seedings and giveaways. Don’t forget that sending free samples without a firm agreement is likely to fail. Building long-term relationships fosters brand loyalty and credibility.
