Internet advertising sales fell by 5% in the first quarter of this year, which is the first decline in this medium since 2002, when the web suffered the effects of the .com crisis.

According to the Interactive Advertising 99 acres data Bureau and the consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers, the recession has reached the Internet, although in a milder way than traditional media, which are suffering a sustained decline that is more structural than the temporary fall affecting the web.

"We are confident that growth will resume as the economic climate in the United States improves," said Randall Rothenberg, managing director of the Interactive Advertising Bureau.

In the first quarter, advertisers spent 5.48 billion dollars (3.9 billion euros) on the Internet, a figure that was affected by lower investments by banks, car manufacturers, department stores and real estate companies, which were hit hard by the crisis.
