An efficient Avondale back line were too good for Tech-Waratahs at Gerry Cappetta Oval, eventually running out to a 47 - 3 final score. Tech-Waratahs felt the absence of five 1st Grade players and were unable to secure any real quality ball.
Tech was the first to get onto the scoreboard with a penalty by Cody Grayson in the 10th minute, but struggled after that to do anything positive with the little quality possession their forwards were able to secure. Tech captain-coach Tim Olsen lead his determined pack and although they were able to get over the advantage line regularly, the backs were unable to penetrate the Avondale defence, and were easily robbed of the ball in midfield.
Before the game Avondale's coach, James Patrick, announced phone number library his team's intention to "use as much of the paddock as possible" and in their execution the Wombats showed that they are willing to have a crack from anywhere. Recently selected NSW Country squad members, Eli Sinoti and Andre Itula proved elusive with the ball in hand while Ryan Lonsdale proved a devastating finisher both on the left wing and slicing through the heart of the Tech defence on numerous occasions.
Avondale's backs showed phases of great expansive rugby, using the full width of the field to cut through the Tech defence, which often looked a little dazed by some great midfield combinations with Eli Sinoti, Andre Itula (2) and Ryan Lonsdale (2) running in impressive tries. Avondale's new hooker, Elisala Lemalu-Leota, and substitute Josh Wayne rounded off the try scoring feast for the Wombats.
In the 2nd Grade clash, Tech Waratahs proved a much more competitve opponent for Avondale, who were made to fight for their 22 - 12 win.Tech were in the match for much of the first half before succumbing in the third quarter to an Avondale side which was obviously caught off guard by determined tackling from Tech.
