New normal: changes in companies during the pandemic

In addition to working from home, operating methods and the growth of online commerce are among the major changes in the new normal for companies after the Coronavirus pandemic. According to a survey by IBRE/FGV (Brazilian Institute of Economics of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation), more than 85% of Brazilian companies made some change to their operating methods during the pandemic.


Of the companies that have implemented changes, only 27% believe that they will be valid for a certain period. However, the majority, more than 56%, say that the measures will be incorporated partially or fully. Another 17% are still evaluating the issue.

– Mode of operation

– Home Office
Among the most cited changes made in all sectors, home office is the champion due to social isolation. In administrative functions, it reached 94.7% in industries. In service companies, 31.2% managed to reinvent themselves using home office also in operational processes.

– Online Commerce and Delivery
The pandemic also had an impact on consumer habits. As a preventive measure, to avoid physical stores, consumers were directed to online shopping and delivery services.

Compared to the period before the pandemic, companies saw a 20% increase in online sales. The highest percentages were observed in the furniture and home appliances segment, with over 52%, and in the fabrics, clothing and footwear segment, with over 40% increase. The purchase of essential goods and social isolation contributed to hypermarkets and supermarkets being the least affected in the retail sector. Although sales in physical stores predominated before the pandemic, adaptation through delivery and apps happened easily.

Living in the new normal is not easy for anyone, especially for micro and small businesses.
