Back in 1998, he and his colleague Don Norman created the Nielsen Norman Group, which is the most authoritative consulting company in the field of user interfaces. It was Don Norman who actually came up with the term "usability" (user experience, user convenience) in 1993, when he was still working at Apple. We can demonstrate the work of this heuristic using the example of buttons – a modern user does not notice how buttons work, because their instant reactions have become something absolutely natural and, therefore, unnoticeable. But this unnoticeable work immediately becomes visible if something in the interface goes wrong and it immediately seems to us that the system does not work, has frozen, or for some other reason does not react or reacts differently than usual to our actions.

Buttons have different states of being pressed, which are reflected in the change of their appearance. For example, there are such important button statuses as focus - this is necessary, among other things, for those who use the keyboard instead of a mouse and for screen readers for visually impaired and blind users. This status is often missed. In addition, there are states of an active (pressed) button, a button with a mouse hover, and an inactive button - all of them help to understand what is happening now and what action the system is performing.
