The process of setting up your Google My Business profile mostly boils down to one thing: providing basic information about your business. Things like your business name, phone number, hours, and location are all available for you to fill out.

One of the best ways to increase your rankings is to not skimp on this step. Carefully examine every empty box you see and provide as much information about your business as possible.

Of course, make sure all your information is accurate: inaccurate information is a one-way ticket to the bottom of the search results!

3. Consistent information on NAP
Your Google My Business profile information should not only be complete and accurate, but it should also be consistent.

Google crawls the web regularly, taking into account the information it finds in places like your website. If you use the business name “Rossi Rossi Veterinario,” don’t refer to yourself as “Rossi Veterinario” elsewhere. If you do, your rankings could suffer.

The main reason for this penalty is that using inconsistent names, addresses, or phone numbers ( NAP information ) will confuse users, resulting in a poor experience. Stay consistent across the internet for higher rankings.

4. High search relevance
Another major local ranking factor that Google takes into account is search relevance. Your business will not rank for searches that have nothing to do with it.

On a large scale, this is obvious: your clothing store won’t rank in a search for phone repair. But it also happens on a more granular level. If your business is called “Smith Computer Repair,” Google might not rank you either, even if you offer phone repair services.

You can counteract this to some extent by using Google’s “Categories” feature. Rossi Computer Repair would likely select “computer repair” as their primary category, but they might also select “phone repair” if they offer that service as well.

5. Proximity to the researcher
Google My Business is primarily intended to appear in local search rankings, which means it takes into account the location of the searcher. If someone in Milan searches for “auto repair shop near me,” Google will not show them an auto repair shop in Turin.

While this limits the number of users who will see you in local SERPs, it is actually beneficial because you are not wasting your resources on people outside of your geographic area. By ranking you based on proximity, Google allows you to reach your target audience more easily.
