Size really matters
Which social platforms are you planning to post on? If you're going to be posting on multiple platforms, you'll almost certainly need to think about different sizes for each platform. The perfect design on one social network may look terrible on another.
When choosing your background photos or elements, pick ones with some space around the main image, so that important parts don't get cut off when you resize. This way, you'll only have to move a couple of elements around before exporting.
If you're not sure what size to start with, you can use an online design program like Canva, which has pre-loaded sizes. Make sure that relevant elements of the design are distinguishable on each platform, including the main message.
One more tip: Always check how your post displays on mobile! Elements close to the edges, or very small, may simply not be visible or appear cropped.
Highlight your main message
Whether you've spent hours designing a design, you only have a few microseconds to get your message across. If the reason for your post is to announce a sale or an event, make that clear.
